120 km/h to mph

120 km/h is 74.56 mph (74.565 mph to three decimals), because 120 ÷ 1.609344 = 74.565. That is almost exactly a 75 mph US interstate limit, and it is the maximum speed India allows cars on access-controlled expressways under the 2018 MoRTH notification.

Six speed-limit signs converted exactly: 20 mph = 32.19 km/h, 30 mph = 48.28 km/h, 60 mph = 96.56 km/h, 100 km/h = 62.14 mph, 120 km/h = 74.56 mph and 100 mph = 160.93 km/h, each with where that limit applies

120 km/h is 74.56 mph. The exact figure is 74.565 mph: 120 ÷ 1.609344 = 74.565. The converter above starts at 120 km/h; type another value to convert it, or use the full km/h to mph converter for a chart up to 300 km/h.

What is 120 km/h in other units?

Unit 120 km/h equals
Miles per hour 74.565 mph
Knots 64.79 kn
Meters per second 33.33 m/s
Feet per second 109.36 ft/s
Kilometers per minute 2.000 km/min

Where is 120 km/h the speed limit?

India is the largest country where 120 km/h is the legal maximum for cars. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways notification S.O. 1522(E) of 6 April 2018, issued under section 112 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, sets these maximum speeds:

Vehicle class (India) Expressway 4-lane+ divided highway Municipal roads Other roads
Cars, M1 (≤ 8 passenger seats) 120 km/h (74.56 mph) 100 km/h (62.14 mph) 70 km/h (43.50 mph) 70 km/h (43.50 mph)
Buses, M2/M3 (9+ seats) 100 km/h (62.14 mph) 90 km/h (55.92 mph) 60 km/h (37.28 mph) 60 km/h (37.28 mph)
Goods vehicles, N 80 km/h (49.71 mph) 80 km/h (49.71 mph) 60 km/h (37.28 mph) 60 km/h (37.28 mph)

These are ceilings, not targets. The notification lets state governments and road authorities set lower limits on a given road, and several expressways are signed at 100 km/h or less, so always follow the posted sign. Many other km/h countries also use 120 km/h on motorways; check the national transport ministry before you drive, because limits change.

How does 120 km/h compare with US and UK limits?

120 km/h (74.56 mph) is a hair under a 75 mph US limit and about 4.6 mph over the UK’s 70 mph motorway limit.

  • United States. Limits are set by each state. 75 mph, which is 120.70 km/h, is posted on at least some roads in 20 states according to the IIHS speed-limit table, mostly rural interstates in the West, so a 120 km/h sign and a 75 mph sign ask for almost the same speed. The highest US limit, 85 mph on part of Texas SH 130, is 136.79 km/h.
  • United Kingdom. GOV.UK lists the car limit on motorways and dual carriageways as 70 mph and prints it as “(112)” km/h. In exact terms 70 mph is 112.65 km/h, so a European driver holding 120 km/h on a UK motorway is speeding.

Does driving at 120 km/h save much time?

Less than most people expect: 10 minutes per 100 km compared with 100 km/h.

Speed Time for 100 km Time for 100 miles
100 km/h (62.14 mph) 60 min 96.6 min
110 km/h (68.35 mph) 54.5 min 87.8 min
120 km/h (74.56 mph) 50 min 80.5 min
130 km/h (80.78 mph) 46.2 min 74.3 min

Real trips include junctions, traffic and stops, so the real saving is smaller. Stopping distance grows much faster than time saved: the UK Highway Code’s typical stopping distance is 73 m at 60 mph and 96 m at 70 mph (rule 126), and it keeps rising with the square of speed above that. Plan longer trips with the speed, distance and time calculator.

How do I convert 120 km/h to mph in my head?

  • × 0.6: 120 × 0.6 = 72 mph, about 3.5% low.
  • × 5/8: 120 ÷ 8 = 15, × 5 = 75 mph, about 0.6% high.
  • Exact: 74.565 mph.

If you are driving on km/h signs in a car whose dashboard shows mph, aim for just under 75 mph on the dial. Better still, switch our GPS speedometer to km/h before you set off and let a passenger watch it; the driver must not handle a phone. GPS speed is an estimate that depends on signal and sky view, and it can lag in tunnels. For the reverse direction see mph to km/h.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How fast is 120 km/h in mph?

120 km/h is 74.56 mph. Divide 120 by 1.609344 to get 74.565 mph. On a US road that is the same as driving at a 75 mph limit, the posted maximum on many rural interstates in the West.

Is 120 km/h fast?

It is a motorway speed. 120 km/h is the top limit for cars on India's access-controlled expressways and a common motorway limit in other km/h countries. On an ordinary road it is fast: India's limit for cars on four-lane divided highways is 100 km/h.

What is 120 kph in mph?

120 kph is 74.56 mph. kph, kmh and km/h all mean kilometers per hour.

Is 120 km/h over the UK motorway limit?

Yes. The UK motorway limit for cars is 70 mph, which is 112.65 km/h. 120 km/h is 74.56 mph, about 4.6 mph over the limit.

How long does it take to drive 100 km at 120 km/h?

50 minutes. At 100 km/h the same 100 km takes 60 minutes, so going 20 km/h faster saves 10 minutes per 100 km, before stops and traffic.

What is a quick way to convert 120 km/h to mph?

120 × 0.6 = 72 mph (a little low) or 120 × 5/8 = 75 mph (a little high). The exact answer, 74.56 mph, sits between them.

Is 120 km/h 80 mph?

No. 120 km/h is 74.56 mph. 80 mph is 128.75 km/h, about 8.75 km/h faster than 120 km/h. The mix-up comes from treating a mile as 1.5 km; the exact figure is 1.609344 km, so km/h numbers shrink more than people expect.

Is 120 km/h legal in the US?

On many rural highways, yes. 120 km/h is 74.56 mph, just under a 75 mph limit, and IIHS counts 20 states that post 75 mph or more on at least some roads. US signs are in mph, so check the posted limit; in most urban areas 120 km/h would be well over it.

How long does it take to drive 120 km?

One hour at a steady 120 km/h, and 72 minutes at 100 km/h. 120 km is 74.56 miles, so at a US 65 mph cruise it takes about 69 minutes. Real trips take longer once you add stops, junctions and traffic.
