Privacy policy
How Speedometera handles your location (kept on your device), the newsletter, Google Analytics and AdSense cookies, and your US, UK and EU rights.
Effective date and last updated:
Summary
Speedometera ("we", "us") runs speedometera.com, a free GPS speedometer and a set of related tools (see all tools). The short version:
- Your location stays on your device. The speedometer reads GPS in your browser and does its maths there. We do not receive, log or store your coordinates or speed.
- Trip files are created locally. "Save trip (GPX)" builds the file in your browser and downloads it straight to your device. Nothing is uploaded.
- We only hold your email if you give it to us, by subscribing to the newsletter or by emailing us.
- Google may set cookies for analytics and, once ads are live, for advertising. You can opt out of personalised ads, and before ads run for visitors in the EEA, UK and Switzerland we will ask for consent first.
- We do not sell personal information for money. Personalised advertising may count as "sharing" under California law, and you can opt out (see US rights).
Who we are
speedometera.com is an independent site written and operated by Izhar Ahmad Danish. For this policy, the operator is the person responsible for deciding how the limited personal data described here is used (the "controller" in GDPR terms). You can reach us at hello@speedometera.com or through the contact page. We are not a large company and we do not have a separate data protection officer; privacy requests come straight to the operator.
Your location and the speedometer
The speedometer uses your browser's standard Geolocation API. It only starts after you press Start, and your browser asks for permission first. If you refuse, the tool simply does not run; nothing else on the site depends on location.
While it runs, the browser hands the page a stream of readings: latitude, longitude, accuracy, and where the device provides them, speed, altitude and heading. The page uses these, in memory, to show your current and maximum speed, distance, trip time, the speed graph and the optional speed alert. The code that does this is a script on the page itself; it does not make network requests with your location. Our server code only handles one route, the newsletter sign-up, and has no endpoint that accepts location.
Readings are discarded when you press reset, reload, or close the tab. If you keep the screen awake, we use the browser's Wake Lock feature, which only stops the screen from dimming and shares nothing.
GPX export. If you press "Save trip (GPX)", the page turns the track it already holds in memory into a GPX file and asks your browser to download it. The file is generated on your device and saved to your device. We never see it. Remember that a GPX file contains your route with timestamps, so be careful who you share it with.
You can withdraw location permission at any time in your browser's site settings (in most browsers, the padlock or site-info icon next to the address bar).
What is stored in your browser
A few small preferences are saved in your browser's local storage so the site remembers them on your next visit. They never leave your device and we cannot read them:
| Key | What it stores | Why |
|---|---|---|
speedo_unit | Your chosen unit (km/h, mph, knots, m/s) | Opens the speedometer in your unit |
theme | Light or dark mode | Keeps your display choice |
spd_subscribed | A flag that you subscribed | Stops us asking you again |
spd_exit_seen | When the "before you go" prompt was last shown | Limits how often it appears |
These are strictly functional. Clearing your browser's site data for speedometera.com removes them all.
Newsletter
If you subscribe, you tick a consent box and submit your email address. We store:
- your email address;
- the consent wording you agreed to and the date and time you agreed;
- which sign-up form you used and the page you were on;
- the country your connection came from, as reported by Cloudflare (country only, not your IP address).
This is kept in a Cloudflare D1 database that only the operator can access. We use it only to send the newsletter and to prove you consented. We do not sell, rent or trade the list, and we do not add it to advertising audiences.
Confirmation. Sign-up is currently single opt-in: your address is added when you submit the form. We plan to add a confirmation email (double opt-in) before the first newsletter is sent, and will update this section when it goes live.
Unsubscribing. Every newsletter email includes a one-click unsubscribe link, and we honour it promptly (US CAN-SPAM requires opt-outs to be processed within 10 business days; we aim for immediately). You can also email hello@speedometera.com at any time and ask to be removed. When you unsubscribe we stop emailing you and keep only a minimal record (your address marked "unsubscribed") so we do not accidentally add you again. If you would rather we delete even that, say so and we will.
The form is protected against bots with a hidden field and same-site checks, not with a third-party CAPTCHA.
When you email us
If you write to hello@speedometera.com, we receive your email address, name if you include it, and whatever you write. Mail to our domain address is forwarded to a mailbox the operator controls. We use it only to answer you, and delete correspondence once it is no longer needed, normally within 24 months.
Analytics (Google Analytics 4)
When enabled on the live site, we use Google Analytics 4 to understand which tools are used, which pages help people and where they leave. GA4 uses first-party cookies (such as _ga and _ga_<ID>) and collects pages viewed, approximate location derived from your IP address, device and browser type, referring site and interaction events. Google states that GA4 does not log or store IP addresses. We do not send names, emails or coordinates to Google Analytics, and we do not try to identify individual visitors.
You can block analytics with the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on, a content blocker, or by declining analytics in the consent message once one is shown (see EEA, UK and Swiss visitors).
Advertising (Google AdSense) and cookies
The site is free because we plan to show ads through Google AdSense. Ads appear around the content, never inside the speedometer itself. When ads are active:
- Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a user's prior visits to this website or other websites.
- Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to our users based on their visit to this site and/or other sites on the Internet.
- You may opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings. Alternatively, you can opt out of a third-party vendor's use of cookies for personalised advertising by visiting www.aboutads.info.
Other third-party vendors and ad networks may serve ads on this site through Google's ad technology. You can review and opt out of many of them at aboutads.info, the Network Advertising Initiative opt-out and, in Europe, youronlinechoices.eu. If we ever work with an ad network directly, we will name it here with a link to its policy and opt-out page.
Ad cookies can include Google's IDE, __gads and __gpi. Even if you opt out of personalisation, Google may still use cookies for limited purposes such as frequency capping, measuring ad delivery and detecting fraud. Read more in Google's How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services and How Google uses cookies in advertising.
You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings. The speedometer works with every cookie blocked.
Hosting and security logs (Cloudflare)
The site is served by Cloudflare. To deliver pages and protect the site from attacks, Cloudflare processes technical data for every request, such as IP address, the page requested, browser user agent and time. Cloudflare may set a strictly necessary security cookie (for example __cf_bm) to tell people from bots. This data is used for security and reliability only. Cloudflare acts as our service provider and processor; see the Cloudflare Privacy Policy. We do not combine these logs with anything else.
California and other US state rights
The California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended by the CPRA, applies to for-profit businesses that meet a threshold: annual gross revenue above about US $26.6 million (the inflation-adjusted figure), buying, selling or sharing the personal information of 100,000 or more California consumers or households a year, or earning half or more of annual revenue from selling or sharing personal information. As a small independent site we do not expect to meet these, so we may not be legally bound, but we voluntarily honour its core rights, including opt-out requests and Global Privacy Control signals, and the same applies to similar laws in states such as Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Texas and Oregon.
Categories collected in the last 12 months:
| Category (CCPA) | Examples | Source | Disclosed to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Identifiers | Email address (only if you subscribe or write); online identifiers in cookies; IP address | You; your browser | Cloudflare (hosting); Google (analytics, ads) |
| Internet activity | Pages viewed, interactions with the site and ads | Your browser | |
| Geolocation (coarse) | Country from your connection; approximate area from IP | Cloudflare; Google | |
| Precise geolocation | GPS coordinates | Not collected. Processed on your device only. | |
We do not collect sensitive personal information as defined by the CCPA, and we do not knowingly sell or share the personal information of anyone under 16.
Your rights. You can ask to know what we hold about you, to get a copy, to correct it, to delete it, and to opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising. We do not sell personal information for money. Personalised ads through Google may count as sharing, so to opt out you can:
- turn on Global Privacy Control in your browser, which we treat as a valid opt-out request for that browser (no ads run on the site yet; when they do, we will configure them to respect this signal);
- use Google Ads Settings;
- or email hello@speedometera.com with the subject "Do not sell or share".
To exercise a right, email us. Because we hold so little, we usually only need you to write from the email address in question. You can use an authorised agent if you send us their written permission. We will respond within 45 days, and will not charge you, deny service or change the quality of the site because you used a right. The California Attorney General explains these rights at oag.ca.gov/privacy/ccpa.
EEA, UK and Swiss visitors (GDPR)
Ads are not live on the site yet. Before advertising cookies are used for visitors from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, we will show a consent message from a Google-certified consent management platform, as Google requires, and will add a link on the site for changing your choice later. If you decline, you may still see non-personalised ads. Analytics for these visitors will also follow that consent choice once the message is in place, and this section will be updated when it goes live.
Legal bases: consent for advertising and analytics cookies and for the newsletter; legitimate interests for security logs and for answering your messages; and no legal basis is needed for GPS because we do not process it, your browser does.
Your rights under the GDPR and UK GDPR: access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, objection, and withdrawing consent at any time without affecting earlier processing. You can complain to your local supervisory authority; in the UK that is the Information Commissioner's Office.
International transfers: Google and Cloudflare may process data in the United States and other countries. Google LLC and Cloudflare, Inc. are both listed as participants in the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework (and its UK Extension and the Swiss-U.S. framework) on dataprivacyframework.gov, and also rely on standard contractual clauses where needed.
Children (COPPA)
speedometera.com is a general-audience site for drivers, riders, travellers and athletes. It is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or under 16 in the EEA and UK). The speedometer collects no personal information from anyone, and the newsletter is meant for adults. If you are a parent and believe your child has sent us an email address, contact us and we will delete it promptly. See the FTC's children's privacy guidance for more on COPPA.
How long we keep data
| Data | Kept for |
|---|---|
| GPS readings and trip track | Not kept by us; only in your browser until you reset or close the page |
| Newsletter subscriber record | Until you unsubscribe; then a minimal suppression record, or deletion on request |
| Emails to us | As long as needed to handle your message, normally no more than 24 months |
| Google Analytics data | GA4 keeps user- and event-level data for the retention period set in the property: 2 months by default, or up to 14 months for a standard property. Aggregated reports are not affected by this setting. |
| Cloudflare request logs | Per Cloudflare's own retention; we do not export or store them |
| Browser preferences | On your device until you clear site data |
Security
The site is served only over HTTPS with HSTS, a strict content security policy and a permissions policy that lets only our own pages ask for location. The newsletter database is not publicly reachable. No system is perfectly secure, but because we hold so little personal data, there is very little to expose.
We link to standards bodies, government sources and other references. Their privacy practices are their own.
Changes and contact
We will update this policy when the site, our providers or the law change, for example when ads, the consent message or newsletter confirmation emails go live. The date at the top will change, and significant changes will be noted here.
For privacy questions or requests, email hello@speedometera.com or use the contact page. Related pages: terms of use, disclaimer and about us.
